This Victorian era painting depicts Sappho, the poetess. Sappho was a historical Greek woman who lived somewhere between 630 and 570 B.C.E. While many of her works have been lost, she is famous (or perhaps infamous) for her erotic love poems to both women and men.
Historians and poetry lovers have been arguing about whether she was a lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual for centuries. What's certain, is that her name is the origin of the term "Sapphic" and her home, the Island of Lesbos, is the origin of the term "lesbian".
Sappho was often referred to as the "tenth muse" in celebration of her abilities as a poet and writer.
